The solution
With your electric bill, do you really know what you’re paying for, or are you in the dark?
All Texas consumers in the deregulated market have a right to make an informed choice on electricity providers. But too often hidden fees, fine print, and miniscule variations between electric plans can add up to big differences in your monthly bill. With more than 40 retail electric providers offering more than 140 different plans in Texas, how can you ever do a side-by-side comparison? It’s like comparing apples to oranges.
A standard electricity plan will help to lower electric bills and make the market more competitive.
House Bill 1006 and Senate Bill 948, which were considered in the most recent session of the Texas Legislature, would have directed deregulated retail electric providers to add standardized electricity plans to their regular selection of offers. This means that Texans would get another choice in the market — but one that allows for comparisons based on price alone, and not differences in the fine print. With standardized deals, the only difference is cost. It’s that simple..
All retail electric providers can offer any other plans in addition to the standard plan, but we, as Texas consumers, deserve a baseline for comparisons. Although House Bill 1006 and Senate Bill 948 unfortunately failed under heavy industry pressure, you can still call upon your local lawmaker to reconsider the issue during the next legislative session.
